The word synod is derived from Greek words that mean walking together. The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, founded in 1847, is comprised of Lutheran congregations with 2.2 million members in the United States who hold a shared confession about God the Father, his Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit as taught in the Holy Bible and expressed in the Lutheran Confessions. The LCMS also has partner churches around the world.
